MANGALORE: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has urged the Mangalore City Corporation authorities to roll back the increase in water tariff.

“The corporation should continue with the tariff that prevailed before September, 2007,” Munir Katipalla, president, Mangalore city committee of the DYFI said in a release.

The corporation had increased the tariff from September 1, 2007 when it was under the rule of the administrator.

The committee alleged that the corporation was planning to privatise drinking water supply. The Congress, which was the Opposition party, had joined hands with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in this regard, he added.

It said that the corporation had allotted the task of issuing water bills at select wards to a private agency. The bills issued by it had several defects, Mr. Katipalla said and added that the general body of the corporation which met recently did not take any decision to resolve these problems. The release also urged the corporation to withdraw its order directing outsourcing of water bills. The bills issued by it should be withdrawn and fresh ones issued, it said.

If the corporation failed to take action, DYFI workers would intensify their agitation and petition the Mayor, Mr. Katipalla added.
